Committee Message

Update to all Glens and Dalriada U3A members

Face to Face Meetings

The Committee met in the last week of September and discussed this subject.

New infections of Covid19 were, and still are, averaging over 1000 per day. Over 300 patients in Northern Ireland are taking up Hospital beds and usually over 30 people are in Intensive Care, on a daily basis.

We found this disquieting. While the numbers are not rising rapidly they are still very steady and stubbornly constant. Again, health professionals have flagged up the projected prevalence of ‘flu and other respiratory illnesses over the winter period and there is no sign yet of the promised roll-out of the vaccination programme for ‘flu nor the Covid vaccine booster dose.

The Committee decided that while outdoor activities could be held, we would be happier to resume face to face meetings when these booster vaccines were administered. Therefore, to allow time for the booster vaccination programme to be rolled out we suggested indoor activities should not be resumed before the New Year.

Zoom Training Course

Do you feel that you would benefit from some training on the use of the ‘zoom’ programme? We would like to organise a refresher course so if you are interested, get in touch with Kathy O’Donnell or Mary Blaney as soon as possible.

What other zoom activities can we provide?

We are always willing to start new group activities.

If you can think of an activity which can be done via zoom we will do our best to initiate it.

The Glens and Dalriada u3a

Our geographical position encompasses some of the most beautiful areas of North Antrim.  The famous nine glens, with their evocative names are rich in folklore and history. The natural beauty of the area is a world away from the frantic rush of modern life.

Dalriada “The Kingdom of the Sea”, stretching across the sea of Moyle between the North Antrim coast and the Mull of Kintyre was probably Ireland's first and only maritime Kingdom.  Steeped in Legend and romance it is the earliest known realm to unite the lands of Ireland with those of Scotland.

The University of the third age is a self-help organization, open to people who are no longer in full time employment. It draws on the wealth of knowledge and experience of members to set up study groups and common interest groups. It’s main objective is to provide a variety of physical and mental stimulation for those who join. Groups meet at weekly, fortnightly or monthly intervals and occasionally for trips and holidays. The term University is used in broadest sense meaning the University of Life.

The Glens and Dalriada u3a is autonomous, but is affiliated to a national and international movement.

Our u3a group was formed in 2007. At the moment we have a range of over 20 activities in place Monday to Friday at a number of venues.  A sense of isolation can occur for anyone living alone particularly during the winter months, and especially for those in rural areas. Therefore it is our aim to offer regular socially based activities run in daylight hours, to enable members meet with their friends and acquaintances and to make new ones.

Added to the regular locally based activities is our “ Days Away”, --planned trips and visits are organised at various times through out the year.  These are usually one day affairs’ a trip for example to the Fermanagh Lakeland, Historic Derry, or a visit to a show in the Grand Opera house.

We do however venture much further afield usually in the autumn. We welcome fellow travellers from other U3A groups to accompany us. This year we are off to Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy.
